BC Hydro and Power Authority (BC Hydro) is Canada’s third-largest electric utility and a provincial Crown Corporation. It is the main electricity distributor in the Province of British Columbia, serving close to 2 million customers.
98 per cent of the electricity we generate is from clean, renewable sources. Putting BC Hydro’s surplus capability to its highest and best uses provides BC Hydro customers with the environmental benefit of lower Greenhouse Gas emissions and the economic benefit of the purchase of power when it is not needed locally, while providing economic and environmental benefits for British Columbia. All income generated by Powerex importing and exporting energy is returned to BC Hydro, which helps the utility keep electricity rates affordable for its customers.
Powerex also markets the Canadian Entitlement to Downstream Benefits on behalf of the Province of B.C. The income Powerex earns from the Canadian Entitlement goes directly to the account of the B.C. taxpayer.
British Columbians enjoy some of the lowest electricity rates in North America thanks, in part, to Powerex’s energy marketing and trading activities. All Powerex's trade income helps keep rates affordable for BC Hydro customers. Putting the surplus capability of the BC Hydro system to its best use, we provide economic benefits for B.C. as well as environmental benefits for B.C. and beyond.
