Powerex is seeking two talented, driven, team-oriented professionals willing to explore a career change into the exciting role of an Energy Trader – a career that provides the opportunity to be at the forefront of the clean energy transition.
ABOUT POWEREX
Powerex Corp. is a market leader in the trading and marketing of clean and renewable wholesale electricity and associated environmental products. We are at the forefront of the clean energy transition, helping our wholesale customers throughout Western North America meet their increasingly ambitious environmental goals. Our customers include electricity and natural gas utilities, global energy companies, large financial institutions, and global technology companies. We are an established, entrepreneurial, and consistently successful company that is a wholly owned subsidiary of BC Hydro. Powerex’s financial success directly benefits the citizens of British Columbia as Powerex’s income helps lower BC Hydro’s electricity rates.
Fast paced, dynamic, and empowering are words that describe a career with Powerex. We pride ourselves on having a supportive and fun culture, and a strong commitment to the development and wellbeing of our employees. With an average tenure of 15+ years on our trade floor, Powerex stands out as an employer of choice in Vancouver. Ask any Powerex employee what they love about their job, and their first comment will likely be “the people I work with every day.”
At Powerex we believe that a diverse team is a strong team, and our dedication to equity and inclusion is intertwined with our performance-based culture. We strive for excellence in everything we do, and we recognize that diverse perspectives and backgrounds fuel innovation and drive superior performance.
ABOUT THE ROLE
Our Energy Traders transact wholesale electricity and related environmental products, optimizing deliveries across western North America. This includes negotiating purchases and sales with our diverse wholesale customers as well as participating in multiple organized markets. This is a professional shift position as a Real Time Trader, working in a team of three rotating traders, and collaborating with the rest of the trade floor. You will learn to use an array of software applications and systems that help you execute your tasks efficiently, with the 24/7 support of dedicated IT staff.
Your work will entail building and managing relationships with our customers. The different markets we participate in can quickly become volatile, resulting in a fast-paced and exciting day. A key difference between this and other professional positions is that, as a Realtime Trader, you have a 37.5-to-40-hour week, and the work is done when your shift is over, with another trader taking over all responsibilities at the end of your shift.
Direct experience in energy markets is not required. You will be trained by a team of experienced traders while learning first-hand about our markets which are dynamic, vibrant and constantly evolving.
The work is demanding and there is a lengthy learning curve because of the complexity and dynamic nature of energy markets in each of the jurisdictions that we participate in. Your real-time colleagues will mentor and train you to effectively manage the demands and challenges of the role. You will never work in isolation or without support.
When your shift is over and you return home, you will know you’ve generated value to our customers while generating trading income that lowers rates for BC Hydro’s customers.
QUALFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
The ideal candidate will have a University Degree in a Commerce (Finance, Accounting), Economics, Engineering, Business Administration, or a related highly analytical field. Other desired qualifications / experience include:
- 5-8 years of progressive professional experience where you achieved success in each role
- Naturally analytical, and able to multi-task in a high-pressure environment
- Exceptional interpersonal and verbal communication skills
- Negotiation skills
- Ability to thrive within a team environment that competes externally, but not internally
- Self-aware, humble and intellectually curious
- Highly organized, detail-oriented, resilient, and determined
- Adaptable to rapidly changing conditions and priorities, with quick-thinking skills and an innate sense of urgency
