The rotational internship at Powerex gave me an incredible opportunity to launch a career in the electricity and clean energy sector.  By rotating through various business groups at Powerex, I was able to acquire a more well-rounded knowledge of the energy trading industry that I am sure will be instrumental to my career going forward. The experience I gained through each one of my rotations allowed me to better understand some of the intricacies that exist in the dynamic and unique industry in which Powerex operates in. As someone fresh off graduation, this experience was invaluable. Powerex’s superb company culture makes for an environment where even interns are encouraged to take on projects that truly add value, all while being surrounded by colleagues with decades of experience who are more than willing to help younger employees get up to speed. I am truly grateful to have come through this program and look forward to continuing my career here at Powerex.

My 8-month Co-op term at Powerex with the Market Risk team was an invaluable learning experience. I got the opportunity to work on meaningful projects which helped improve business processes and impacted business decision making. These projects helped me understand the business, energy trading industry, as well as develop transferable technical skills. Despite the steep learning curve, I really appreciate the people-oriented culture and supportive working environment at Powerex, with everyone at the firm always willing to share their knowledge and help me grow. I even got the opportunity to meet my colleagues at events outside of the work environment which helped me build meaningful relationships at the firm. Overall, the work-life balance, supportive environment, stimulating work and the complex structure of the energy trading industry contributed to an amazing Co-op experience at Powerex.

After attending an educational trade floor tour of Powerex, I decided to apply as an energy trader.  The strongly collaborative environment and high performance standard were immediately apparent.  As a new trader, I was appreciative of the training and professional development efforts from a welcoming team with a deep industry knowledge base.  From there I moved into an origination role, which includes connecting with customers across the west for custom energy deals.  Throughout my time at Powerex I have found myself consistently broadening my skills in quickly evolving markets.

A few years ago I joined Powerex after changing careers, which can be daunting in its own way, but the team here has made that transition seamless for me with dedicated training and mentorship. So far I have found the work to be exhilarating and in an accommodative and supportive environment. Every day has different challenges. You will be kept sharp, motivated and constantly thinking on your feet - there is absolutely nothing mundane about our work! With regard to the staff, my coworkers are decent smart people and management does a great job at involving the entire team in the direction and aspirations of the company. You always feel like your efforts are valued - I honestly couldn’t be happier working here.

Powerex provides the best of both worlds; excellent benefits and pension of a large company, while maintaining the agility, fun culture and family feeling of a small organization.  In my 20+ years with the organization, I have been allowed to explore many diverse roles from the Trade floor transmission portfolio management to Settlements to Project Management to Compliance and now IT Business Analyst.  On the job learning opportunities are tremendous, if you want them.  Powerex was very accommodating when I wanted to change roles for family reasons and become part-time for a short while.  I’ve seen many other employees who love the role they are in and have chosen not to move in 20 years,  not for lack of opportunity, but because they are happy.  We hire many co-op students who frequently come back after they graduate.  If you are looking for a career, this is the place to be.

As a Rotational Analyst, I am gaining a great understanding of the Energy industry. From completing a variety of daily tasks such as energy and transmission checkouts with counterparties and publishing the daily profit and loss statements, to leading a major project, my role has provided exposure to the inner-workings of the business. I’ve felt fully integrated with my teams from day one and I am encouraged to continually challenge myself. At Powerex I’ve had the opportunity to learn a multitude of invaluable knowledge from experts in the field, and have enjoyed getting to know my coworkers across different areas of the company. Powerex has a fun, friendly, and collaborative work culture and it has been a privilege to work for an organization which is bigger than myself.

Through a highly interpersonal culture and a dynamic work environment, Powerex provided a challenging yet engaging learning experience. From my first day, all my co-workers went out of their way to welcome me and help ensure I settled in quickly, thereby demonstrating the positive atmosphere present at the company. Equally, I was encouraged to take on responsibility and pursue projects that contributed to our team and created value for the company. As a result, Powerex provided a unique experience which combined hands-on problem-solving and cooperation with a knowledgeable and welcoming family.

Since joining Powerex as a Rotational Analyst, I have completed rotations in the Management, Reporting and Planning and Credit Risk team, and am now training for my first front-office rotation with the Daily Optimization group. Inherent to Powerex is a culture of learning and sharing knowledge. I have found it extremely rewarding to be a part of the team and to have the opportunity to learn from talented experts in the field. I also really enjoy the fast-paced, exciting, and often complex nature of work as well as the vibrant, fun-natured environment.

My definition of a great workplace has growth opportunity, talented people, and interesting work.  Powerex meets all the criteria and more.  I have been working at Powerex since 2007. From IT intern, to tier 3 operation support, to developer lead, I am a great example of growth opportunity at Powerex. Throughout the various roles, I have met many talented people and together achieved success on challenging yet rewarding projects.  Powerex is the place to be if you enjoy working hard and have lots of fun doing so with the team.
