A few years ago I joined Powerex after changing careers, which can be daunting in its own way, but the team here has made that transition seamless for me with dedicated training and mentorship. So far I have found the work to be exhilarating and in an accommodative and supportive environment. Every day has different challenges. You will be kept sharp, motivated and constantly thinking on your feet - there is absolutely nothing mundane about our work! With regard to the staff, my coworkers are decent smart people and management does a great job at involving the entire team in the direction and aspirations of the company. You always feel like your efforts are valued - I honestly couldn’t be happier working here. 

During my 8 months as a Full Stack Developer Co-op at Powerex, I had the privilege of contributing to a diverse range of projects and applications that had a direct and meaningful impact on users and the business. This experience not only deepened my technical knowledge in software development but also provided many insights into the energy industry and the business. The dynamic nature of the different projects and applications at Powerex helped me gain valuable experience across a wide range of programming languages, frameworks, and systems, enhancing my skills as a developer. Furthermore, Powerex has an exceptional company culture. From day one, the team was welcoming, approachable, and supportive, creating an environment that fostered and enriched my learning and growth. Overall, my time at Powerex was incredibly rewarding and I had an amazing experience as a Co-op student.

As a Rotational Analyst, I am gaining a great understanding of the Energy industry. From completing a variety of daily tasks such as energy and transmission checkouts with counterparties and publishing the daily profit and loss statements, to leading a major project, my role has provided exposure to the inner-workings of the business. I’ve felt fully integrated with my teams from day one and I am encouraged to continually challenge myself. At Powerex I’ve had the opportunity to learn a multitude of invaluable knowledge from experts in the field, and have enjoyed getting to know my coworkers across different areas of the company. Powerex has a fun, friendly, and collaborative work culture and it has been a privilege to work for an organization which is bigger than myself.

I returned to Powerex as a Rotational Analyst after my co-op. So far, I have worked in Finance, Risk, and Front Office Analytics. Working in different teams has allowed me to develop a well-rounded skill set and gain a deeper understanding of the industry and Powerex’s operations through multiple lenses. I had the opportunity to work on meaningful projects, which helped improve business processes and supported business decision-making. I appreciate the supportive work environment and the stimulating work, along with the learning opportunities at Powerex.

The Rotational Analyst program at Powerex has been a great springboard into the energy industry. Having rotated through a variety of back, middle and front office roles, I have enjoyed learning and growing at a rapid pace over the past 3 years. It has been particularly rewarding to be frequently challenged by my work while receiving high quality mentorship from an experienced team around me. A career at Powerex is one that comes with lifelong learning, exciting opportunities, and a fun work environment.

Powerex provides the best of both worlds; excellent benefits and pension of a large company, while maintaining the agility, fun culture and family feeling of a small organization.  In my 20+ years with the organization, I have been allowed to explore many diverse roles from the Trade floor transmission portfolio management to Settlements to Project Management to Compliance and now IT Business Analyst.  On the job learning opportunities are tremendous, if you want them.  Powerex was very accommodating when I wanted to change roles for family reasons and become part-time for a short while.  I’ve seen many other employees who love the role they are in and have chosen not to move in 20 years,  not for lack of opportunity, but because they are happy.  We hire many co-op students who frequently come back after they graduate.  If you are looking for a career, this is the place to be.

After attending an educational trade floor tour of Powerex, I decided to apply as an energy trader.  The strongly collaborative environment and high performance standard were immediately apparent.  As a new trader, I was appreciative of the training and professional development efforts from a welcoming team with a deep industry knowledge base.  From there I moved into an origination role, which includes connecting with customers across the west for custom energy deals.  Throughout my time at Powerex I have found myself consistently broadening my skills in quickly evolving markets.

The Rotational Analyst Program at Powerex was an invaluable springboard for my career in the energy industry. Through rotations in Credit Risk, Transmission Planning & Grid Innovations, Analytics, and Daily Optimization, I built on my engineering background and gained firsthand insight into the complexities of electricity trading. The collaborative culture at Powerex, paired with supportive colleagues who generously shared their expertise, provided an excellent environment for continuous learning. This experience broadened my perspective on multiple facets of the business and prepared me for ongoing success in a fast-paced, dynamic field.

My definition of a great workplace has growth opportunity, talented people, and interesting work.  Powerex meets all the criteria and more.  I have been working at Powerex since 2007. From IT intern, to tier 3 operation support, to developer lead, I am a great example of growth opportunity at Powerex. Throughout the various roles, I have met many talented people and together achieved success on challenging yet rewarding projects.  Powerex is the place to be if you enjoy working hard and have lots of fun doing so with the team.

Interning at Powerex for the last 8 months has been an incredible opportunity. The company fosters a culture of collaboration, support, and innovation, where the IT department is genuinely valued. As a Full Stack Developer Co-Op, I worked on real-world projects that directly drove business success, gaining exposure to a variety of technologies while collaborating across different areas of the business. The flexibility in the types of projects you can take on, combined with the strong support from knowledgeable colleagues, creates a dynamic environment for learning and growth. The in-office culture encourages asking questions and evolving as a software developer. There’s never a dull moment, and I highly recommend this co-op to anyone eager to sharpen their technical skills and make a meaningful impact.

Following two valuable summer internships, transitioning into a full-time rotational analyst role has shown me just how fulfilling a career at Powerex can be. The rotational program, a unique offering, has helped me develop transferable skills, deepen my understanding of the energy industry, and grow in a supportive, energetic environment. The work itself is always evolving, with the company’s presence in such a dynamic industry ensuring that employees remain engaged, challenged, and excited to come to work each day. Thanks to Powerex’s inclusive structure, new employees are encouraged to continually learn from highly knowledgeable colleagues, and each individual’s ideas and contributions can directly impact the organization, no matter their position. What stood out to me the most is the flexibility at Powerex. They truly care about the success of each employee and tailor the experience to match a specific person. This allows the individual to learn and apply their skills in the most effective way while supporting critical parts of the Powerex's business. Coming from an engineering program, my internship at Powerex has been a very different experience from what I am used to. In combination with a very supportive team, I have been able to try myself in a completely different profession and I enjoyed it very much. The energy trading industry is a complicated and very important field, and I am glad to have had the ability to learn its fundamentals through the data analytics perspective. 

The rotational internship at Powerex gave me an incredible opportunity to launch a career in the electricity and clean energy sector.  By rotating through various business groups at Powerex, I was able to acquire a more well-rounded knowledge of the energy trading industry that I am sure will be instrumental to my career going forward. The experience I gained through each one of my rotations allowed me to better understand some of the intricacies that exist in the dynamic and unique industry in which Powerex operates in. As someone fresh off graduation, this experience was invaluable. Powerex’s superb company culture makes for an environment where even interns are encouraged to take on projects that truly add value, all while being surrounded by colleagues with decades of experience who are more than willing to help younger employees get up to speed. I am truly grateful to have come through this program and look forward to continuing my career here at Powerex.

My co-op experience as a Business Analyst at Powerex was both challenging and rewarding, providing valuable opportunities for growth and exploration. From day one, I felt supported by my team — they trusted me to take initiative while always being available to offer guidance. Throughout my term, I worked on various projects, gaining hands-on experience across different aspects of the BA role and developing key skills such as context switching. I also had the flexibility to focus on tasks and skills I wanted to develop, giving me the freedom to shape my learning experience. This opportunity deepened my understanding of business analysis and helped me apply my academic knowledge in a real-world setting. The dynamic nature of my role kept me engaged, making this an invaluable experience that strengthened my skills and prepared me for future roles.
